FAQs of laser hair removal

How it works?

The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair and transmitted down the hair shaft, disrupting the hair root growth mechanism. The laser disrupts the hairs that are principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment.

Is the treatment Painful?

This is a common initial concern for many of our patients. The treatment is generally not painful and is well tolerated. Some patients describe the treatment as a sensation like the snap of a rubber band. Topical anesthetic cream is an option for more sensitive areas.

Possible Side Effects?

Redness of the skin and mild swelling that lasts from an hour to 24 hours. In rare instances the redness may last a few days and there could be some grazing or 'scabbing' which typically subsides over a short period of time. [Very Rare]

How many treatments will be needed?

Laser treatment impairs the growth of hair follicles when they are in the growth (or anagen) cycle at the time of treatment. Unfortunately, not all hair follicles are at this stage at the same time. Therefore, for effective permanent hair removal, most people require approximately five to seven treatments to achieve the desired results.

How long will the procedure take?

This varies depending on the area of the body. Treatments can take anything from 1 minute to 1 hour.

Are the results permanent?

Results vary depending on skin and hair type. Studies have shown that many patients can achieve permanent hair loss of up to 85-90% and remaining hair returns lighter and softer.

Pre Care

No sunbathing for 3-4 weeks prior to treatment.

Do not pluck, bleach or use depilatory creams prior to treatment. However, please shave the area to be treated one day prior to appointment. If having bikini-line treated, please shave preferred area to be treated.

Please arrive one hour prior to appointment if you are having anesthetic cream.

Post Care

You may experience mild sunburn like sensation to the treated area that will subside within 24 hours. The use of a cool compress can aid in alleviating any discomfort.

Avoid hot showers, swimming pool or spa baths for 3 days following your treatment to avoid any irritation to the area.

Avoid exercise such as jogging for 24 hours following your treatment as perspiration may irritate the area.

Some redness, minor swelling or in rare cases blistering, may persist for 3-4 days after treatment. This usually resolves without intervention but you must be careful not irritate the area in any way.

It is preferable that you DO NOT SUNBAKE throughout the course of your treatments, as this makes your skin more susceptible to irritation or burn. Ensure you use a high protection sunscreen and reapply regularly.

Do not wax, tweeze or use electrolysis throughout the course of your treatments. It is important for the hair to be at the skin surface for the treatment to be effective.

Ejection is the process whereby treated, intact hair shafts are moved out and released from the base of the follicle. These hairs are not growing but simply ‘clearing out’ in the first 10 to 14 days.

The timing between visits should be 5-8 weeks depending upon body area so that the largest number of hairs are in growth phase, thereby ensuring a more effective treatment. Please ensure that maximum regrowth has occurred before proceeding with your next treatment.
